Our Noses Pointed at Texas

With our business concluded in Las Vegas, it is time to finally head back toward Texas. Time to do some much needed rig maintenance, fix the bod and prepare for a wonderful week with our grandson Oliver. We left Las Vegas on Monday. Of course, the weather was supposed to finally be in the high 70’s, but hey, that’s par for this course. It was unseasonably cold the entire time we were there, but we still had so much fun. The Sunday before we left, we made our way to Sam’s town, had a nice lunch, and broke even at the tables. All in all, a good day.

A great thing that happened while we were there, I was able to make contact with a student from my McGuiness days. Almost 35 years ago. Talk about jumping into the way back machine Mr. Peabody! Vicki and I had the privilege of meeting up with Lori (Kivel) Sheffield and her husband Ben. She was an original girls’ soccer team member. It was so fun hearing stories of days gone by and where she and several others we had in common have done. Sadly, several have departed and it does tear at one’s heart, but not near as much as being able to relive the past memories. We spent over an hour recalling the names and associated stories. Lori’s son actually goes to Cal Poly SLO which makes our connection even stronger. Ben is a wonderful gentleman and a soccer player to boot. Pun intended.

Our first stop after Vegas was Wickenburg AZ. Why Wickenburg you ask? Why not! We stayed in a city campground for next to nothing and although it was primitive camping, it was a very nice stay. Our site was secure, and our nearest neighbor was a football field away so very quiet and restful. Another aspect was that there was no ambient light so when we walked the girls after 8 it was coal mine dark!! Even the dogs were nervous. Who knows what kind of monsters lurk in dark places. Getting to Wickenburg was an experience as going down US 93 we experienced our own personal 6.7 magnitude earthquake for over 80 miles. Good thing we have new tires as the road was so rough, even the coffee in our cups had turned to foam. (Ok a bit of an exaggeration, but damn it was a rough road!)

We then made our way to Tucson and Voyager Encore Resort. Not only a beautiful place to stay, our friends Joe and Annette Ward, whom we saw in Quartzite as you may recall, were there. We spent the afternoon and evening catching up. It’s always good seeing friends and as Vicki says, it was serendipitous. Our next stop will be Deming NM and a Harvest Host so will get some pictures for the next post. Take care and stay safe. By the way, did I mention we are still loving retirement!!

That road to Wickenburg is indeed intense—but such a nice little town! You’re hitting some of my favorite places! Enjoy!
