Kansas and Colorado.

Down the road we’ve come and have put Oklahoma and Kansas in our review mirrors. We are spending 2 days in Brush Colorado and catching our breath as we are a little more than half way to the Pacific Northwest. Why Brush, Co you might ask? We’d reply ‘why not?’ Did have a bit of an issue with RV trip planner as we moved from interstate to state and federal highways. While RV Trip planner is outstanding for finding a general route and basing it our RV safe roads, it doesn’t necessarily take the greatest marked road. Siri is great at finding directions, but not necessarily the most direct routes or best RV roads. Yesterday was a classic example. We got off the interstate and was attempting to find US 385, but going north the signage said we were going on South on 385 and it became a country road with Siri screaming at us to make a U turn. We ended up on Colorado state route 40 and then back of I-70. We stopped for lunch and Siri gave directions for US 59 heading north. For 35 miles, we had a 2 lane highway to ourselves and it was as smooth as satin sheets. We then came to US 34 and headed west for 30 miles, a bit rough but not bad. Then we came to Colorado SR 63. I now know why RV trip wizard did not choose this route. It literally felt like we had square tires for 29 miles. The rig survived a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and we feared opening cabinets when we arrived in Brush. We are located in a wonderful city park with Water and Electric hookups, just no septic. Glad we dumped at the previous spot.

Speaking a previous spots, we stayed the previous night in Oakley Kansas in a motel parking lot which had accommodations for RV’s for under $25 with full Hook Ups!! Mind you I wouldn’t have stayed here for a week, but for one night enroute to elsewhere it was perfect. Pull through sites and easy on easy off the freeway. And it even reminded us of Arlington as we had a feed lot 5 miles away and the smell of manure hung in the air. As we drove through Kansas, our hearts ache for the poor farmers as field after field of corn was dried up and dead. The drought is real and things are not good. Spoke with the manager the night before he said that many farmers were just cutting the fields down as there was nothing to harvest. As we were getting ready to leave we met a nice couple, the Moores, from Missouri and they were traveling with a tear drop trailor. Wonderful folks and we shared a retirement card with them, so hopefully they’ll follow this blog as well.

Before Oakley, we had just left Oklahoma and headed up i-35 toward Witchita Falls and stopped in Macpherson Kansas for the night. Another easy-on-easy off campsite. As always, we were near a railroad crossing as apparently it is a federal law that campgrounds must be near railroads. The 5;30 train whistle was a comforting sound as we walked the girls about the grassy area in front of the the hotel. A nice campground called the McPherson RV ranch and horse motel. Met a very interesting gentleman from Arkansas who was working on the windfarm windmills here locally. Very interesting conversation indeed. I’m always amazed at the folks we meet as we amble across this great country of ours.

Forgot to mention in the last post that both of my inside duelies have a valve stem issue and as part of my vehicle precheck, discovered that they were both at 30 lbs. Will have to have those serviced in addition to the laundry list of repairs all ready on going. In addition to that, we still have a mouse problem. He/She has outsmarted the traps so Vicki has moved us to DefCon 1 and we’ll be purchasing Decon today at the hardware store. Definitely first world problems, but annoying nonetheless.

Sorry for the lack of photos as we don’t have high speed internet in camp grounds so far, but hopefully in the future. Again, first world problem. Hope this finds all of you well and thank you for following our little blog. Always welcome your comments and try to respond when we see them. By the way, did I mention we’re still loving retirement!!!
