Updates in General

Who’d a thunk it, but after only six days I am moving about the RV relatively pain free thanks to this new hip. But as if it went enough to just have a hip replaced, day 2 of recovery and we discovered that we both have Covid. Vicki started with it and of course in our confined space I couldn’t help but catch it as well. Even vaccinated and boosted, this stuff kicks one’s butt! I couldn’t not believe how lousy I felt since Wednesday when the first symptoms appeared. I had originally tested negative while Vicki tested positive on the home test kits. She felt really lousy for 4 days and is recovering nicely. I’m two days behind her and I think I’m over the worst of it. Man, o man this stuff is not something to be messed with. I felt like a roid-raged gym rat beat my entire body with a cricket bat. Along with a nagging cough and a broken faucet in my nose. Buy still in Kleenex is my recommendation!! It makes it a challenge to do your physical therapy when your whole-body aches and the headache that comes with it. Luckily, I have my own nurse ratchet looking after me.

My pain has been minimal and so therefore very few Vicoden. Some interesting dilemmas as together we learn to deal with my new bionic body. Getting into and out of bed at night is a quest as I have no strength to lift my leg up into bed. That makes me totally dependent on Vicki for that move. Sadly, I have to get her up around 4 as man bladder required a trip to the bathroom and then I just go on the walker and catch a few z’s on the couch.

We have been blessed with possibly the best neighbors on the planet. Being isolated on the farm and growing up only children we are so used to doing things on our own. Our friends Christy and Robert as well as Dan and Becky have been bringing us wonderful meals since Sunday night. Such a blessing as Vicki has been to sick to cook and me in the first part of the week unable to stand for any length of time. And we’re talking southern hospitality cooking. C and R brought over a wonderful soup Monday, BBQ Chicken legs on Tuesday and my favorite Beans and Cornbread on Thursday. OMG it is all so delicious and what they don’t realize is that there are only 2 of us. Dan and Becky brought over a roasted chicken which we hungrily devoured like feral dogs. We’ve been eating on the leftovers ever since. They are such caring and compassionate people and we owe them so much.

I have both a visiting nurse and a physical therapist that comes by every other weekday for wound care and PT. Nothing to painful and I am wearing a path in the floor of the RV. Won’t be able to go outside until wednesday due to Covid protocol, but that just builds up more strength and besides it’s too frickin’ hot!!

This past week we got to watch our grandson Emmett play with his little league all stars in the district championships. They won 3 games and lost the last 2. One game they were blown out but the other game was an 8 inning nailbiter where they lost 10-9 with a couple of controversial calls at game’s end. But that’s sports and we are so proud of all the boys, but especially Emmett. Football is starting and Ollie is off to football camp at Fort Casey WA for Stanwood intense sleep over camp. Those testosterone laden boy camps are where bonds everlasting are made and boys just get to be boys. Glad I’m not there just because I cannot stand the smell of Axe!!

Also got a bit of great news although it has been totally expected for quite some time now. My oldest Grandson Dominic is getting married!!! Saw his proposal on Facebook and couldn’t be happier for the both of them. They’ve been high school sweethearts and have been living together for the past couple of years and so now is a good time to tie the knot. Will look forward to travelling up to the pacific northwest to be part of the mayhem that is always a wedding. Won’t be a fun as our friends Ron and Char’s but I imagine it will be pretty close! Speaking of Ron and Char and our Canadian connection, we literally got home from the hospital and after struggling up the steps a package arrived from them and what was in it? Probably the best pick-me-up gift one could receive after hip surgery. Tim Horton’s coffee, a 3 lb tin!! Along with a card signed by the entire connection, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

I have my first doctor’s appointment on Wednesday with my PCP and then meet with the orthopedic doctor the following Monday. I’ll let you know the results. Keeping in mind all the powerful energy you sent me, please continue to send white light and positive energy to Diana L who had a lumpectomy on Thursday. She is such good people and I know that your energies have helped me greatly and therefore do her some good as well.

Basically, we are doing fine down here in South Texas, but the heat is nigh on unbearable. We are averaging in the high 90’s during the day and only get to the low 80’s at night. Now we know why people go north in summer. Always look forward to your comments and did I mention we are still loving retirement!
