Episode 15 : The Journey Back To Brownsville

Our wayward travelers are finally pointing the rig back towards Brownsville, but not before making a few more stops along the way. We spent a week in South Carolina and made a familial connection with a cousin after over 50 years. It was such a joy to catch up with Joey Abbott and reconnect with family. We had a wonderful lunch, times two. Once at a great restaurant, Page’s Okra Grill, which we highly recommend. Then at Joey’s home as we forgot to take pictures the first time, so we made up for it then. (Included at the end)

It was so fun reminiscing family history and getting another point of view with our family legends and history. Didn’t do quite as much sight seeing as previously experienced in the Thousand Trails Park. Mostly did shopping to resupply and got a good deal of reading done. Had a good time in Yemassee SC, which is only a stones throw from the infamous Marine Base, Parris Island. Drove by a couple of times but didn’t go on base.

We then took advantage of the Harvest Host and stayed in Claxton Georgia at the Bliss Hills farm. A wonderful experience as the we were the only occupants, had full hook ups, and were beside a beautiful pond. There was a cut field for Roxie to roam and the pond had catfish to feed. (See Video at end) We could have stayed there at least one more night just to soak up the ambience. The only drawback to this location is apparently GA does not have all of the infrastructure dollars spent, as the last mile to our site was a hard pan dirt road. The dust was so thick Vicki had to say almost ¼ of a mile behind the rig just to stay on the road. Then on the exit back to freeway in was another mile and a half of hardpan and sand. A couple of places were a little dicey and driving on sand in a 38-foot RV can be somewhat exciting.

We then did a back-to-back Harvest Host site. The next one was in Williamson Georgia. This one presented a challenge as I tried to follow the GPS while Vicki suggested (and was right) to follow the signage. I overruled that decision, and we ended up on another dirt road. After a 3-point turnaround we got back on the right road and made it to our destination. It was the Peach Aerodrome, a private air park with a grass runway and several nice homes with private hangers. Similar to Arlington WA where plane owners can fly and land their planes right in their own driveways. We did have a cool thing happen, two black hawk helicopters landed outside the small restaurant and had lunch. They were getting their hours in and told all there ‘the government requires us to fly, so we’re making the best use of tax dollars by flying here for lunch’. Sounds logical to me!! The dirt roads adversely affected our generator. We initially thought that our generator had gone kaput, but upon inspection, the air filter was filled with dirt. So, a quick change and a bit of canned compressed air later and the generator is up and running once again.

From there it was pack up the rig and again head further west, this time to Scottsboro AL and a wonderful county park right on the lake. The highlight of this stop was twofold. First to meet up with my wingman Randy Bray and his wife Linda, and the other to see the unclaimed luggage store. Spent four wonderful days with Randy and Linda and collected on my Green Bay-San Francisco bet. Steak tastes so much better when someone else pays for it!! Still waiting on Ray Mather to pay up, but I’m not holding my breath! (LOL). Caught up with a whole bunch of memories dating back to high school and the Army. Vicki got some cool stuff at the lost luggage store, and I scored some major husband points when I bought her a beautiful Peridot ring.

We have a short leg coming up as we’re only going 100 miles to our next state park campground. While we love the lifestyle, it will be good to get back to Brownsville. Upon returning though I have a bit of work to do as we ordered a 10-piece outdoor furniture set which comes with ‘some assembly required’. That will be fun, I’m sure. A big shout out and thank you to Deb our next-door neighbor who is overseeing the delivery of the boxes and storage/stack at our new place in Brownsville. Looking forward to our October 3rd return.

The weather remains wonderful although we are getting just a touch of fall in the air. Hopefully it will have cooled off in Brownsville for our arrival. Other than that, we wish you all prosperity in all that you do, and did I mention? We’re still loving retirement!
