Episode 13 : DC

This episode finds our wayward travelers in College Park, Maryland. Right on the outskirts of the University of Maryland. We are staying at a true RV resort called Cherry Hill RV Resort. And when I say resort, that is an understatement. This place is truly fantastic. With paved roads to every site, Crushed packed gravel in each site that is immediately smoothed and cleaned when someone departs. A well stocked office with helpful staff. A Concierge service which helps plan trips. A bus stop in the park to connect with the DC metro lines. Several pools, tons of trash receptacles and even spaced dog relief bags throughout the park. It even has a free shuttle service to take you anywhere in the park at any time. And, get this, they even have a dog walking service. For $20 a dog walker will come, walk Roxie, put her back in the coach, all while we are touring DC. How cool is that?!!

Our nation’s capital is truly a sight to behold. Stealing Vicki’s words, its just like we’ve returned to Europe. There are statues everywhere. Lots of generals and statesmen on every corner. We were gob-smacked at the architectural designs of our governmental buildings. It was surreal walking past buildings such as the DOJ, the IRS and the department of the interior.

The Memorials we saw were truly amazing and the pictures do not do them justice. Seeing the MLK memorial was simply beyond words. The Lincoln Memorial, although under rehab construction, was still a sight of see. We then walked to the Viet Nam Memorial and although I was never a part of that, it brought tears to my eyes. To see all the names, the statue of the fighters and the nurses statue left us both overwhelmed. Looking down the reflection pool and seeing the capitol just flooded us with emotions of the history we’ve seen in our short lives.

Driving here in the east is an experience. Many of these drivers are qualifying for something, I just don’t know for what. Thank goodness for the transit station here in the resort. The buses are clean and the subway drops us off right at the Capitol Mall. The subway trains are really fast and very clean as well. Have always felt safe and have not had problems.

The only drawback of the DC experience has been the weather. Late July and August were not the best times to be here as the temperatures have been in the high 90’s with humidity exceeding 70% and no wind to speak of. Does not make walking about DC pleasant. Still have another week of sightseeing before we start heading south and returning to Texas in October. Did I mention it yet again? We’re still loving retirement.
